“S-motion” is a section of the VOLUMES archive curated by M.Paradoxa artist collective (Balca Ergener, Ziqi Jiang, Esther Schena, Lisa Biedlingmaier). It brings together publications that concern or are products of collaborative work taking different forms. M.Paradoxa has been guided by a feminist approach. For them, “S-motion” is an unfolding where their different speeds and time perceptions meet each other. There are turbulences and currents, possibilities to linger and to swerve, to be carried or pulled along. Like many collectives with members who are citizens of different countries, they are increasingly confronted with the need to work together from a distance and are continuing to find different ways to do this. Several works in the archive section therefore address translation, working with different languages and transgressing borders.
The VOLUMES Archive is based on a collection of zines, artist books and publications, which exists thanks to the donations received since 2013 for our International Open Call exhibition and Book Awards. Since 2015, we have worked towards cataloguing sections of this collection, in collaboration with artists, historians and curators. Each archive section compiles and activates content from our existing collection, while suggesting new acquisitions to complement and expand this curated constellation of publications. This final compilation is what gets archived as a section.

VOLUMES is starting a new collection compiling publications, artist books and zines connected to Zürich. Anyone is invited to give one publication directly or indirectly related to the city. The first stage of the archive will be exhibited this year at VOLUMES 2016.
The third edition of VOLUMES – Independent Art Publishing Fair – returns on Friday 25th and Saturday 26th of November 2016 at Gessnerallee in Zürich. The fair will present a fine selection of local and international art books, zines and magazines. The fair will also feature a symposium, a range of performances, exhibitions and workshops.
After a successful second edition in November 2015 at the off-space Kunstraum Walcheturm, VOLUMES will take place at Gessnerallee, a central venue for performing arts that will open its doors to the only fair of its kind in the city.
VOLUMES 2016 will feature a unique symposium, curated by this year’s special guest Damian Christinger, who will introduce speakers exploring different aspects of the independent publishing scene. The visitors will also get a chance to discover publishers and artists from Switzerland and Europe, who will be showcasing their production in person. A performance programme curated in collaboration with Anke Hoffmann will explore further the creative practices around self publishing. The International Open Call exhibition will act as a sort of snapshot of an even more global production while the Zürich Archive will present a selection of artist books connected to the city.
You have the option of booking a full table (approx. 0.6 x 2m) for 100 CHF or half a table (approx. 0.6 x 1m) for 50 CHF. You can also take part in the international Open Call Exhibition or the Zürich Archive by donating one publication. If you would like to do a workshop, a performance, a reading or have a book launch at the fair, please let us know.

A Zine is a small circulation self-published work of original or appropriated texts and images. Frequently reproduced via a photocopier and bound with staples, zines are very individualised and are informed by the punk and DIY (Do It Yourself) ethos. The topics covered by zines are broad. They can be dedicated to art, design, poetry, politics, subcultures, fanfiction, short stories etc. The majority of zines are produced in editions of fewer than 100, and profit is not the primary intent of publication.
Collage (from the french coller = to glue) consists in the creation of an ensemble by pasting cuttings of already existing pictures, illustrations or photos. The origins of collage can be traced back hundreds of years, but the technique made a dramatic reappearance in the early part of 20th century as an art form of novelty. A collage may include fragments of newspaper or magazine, portions of texts, photographs or other found objects, glued to a piece of paper or a canvas. By fragmenting and recombining existing text and images, new content and meaning can be created in a playful way. The reconstruction can be done arbitrarily or intentionally.
