VOLUMES 2016 25- 26/11/2016 Gessnerallee Zürich, CH
The 2016 edition took place at Gessnerallee Zürich, a venue for the production and presentation of works in the performing arts in the heart of the city. The „Nordflügel“ of Gessnerallee hosted the stands of the publishers and a big workshop table, while in "Stall 6“ a programme of performances co-curated by Anke Hoffmann took place. Furthermore on Friday night austropop musician Voodoo Jürgens gave a free concert.
For the first time this year, there was an informal one day symposium: "Publishing as Resistance“, curated by special guest Damian Christinger. This symposium showcased lectures, presentations and performances by invited specialists and players of the independent publishing scene. Covering different aspects of the historical and current examples of publication as a form of resistance, the event ended with a round table, where the fair's exhibitors and the general public will be invited to take part.
The book exhibition presented two different VOLUMES collections. The first one is the classic "International Open Call", for which zinesters and artists from all around the world send one publication to VOLUMES. The result acts as a snapshot of the current international scene. The second exhibition, the "Zürich Archive" was a new compilation of publications, art books and zines which are connected to the city and offer an insight into different relations and experiences within the location.

[f: la répète], performative reading by Le Foyer with Petra Koehle /Nicolas Vermot-Petit-Outhenin, Riikka Tauriainen, Georg Rutishauser, Anna Francke, Gioia Dal Molin
[f: la répète] is a performative reading based on a two-part research project at Le Foyer. The title [f: la répète] refers to the expression «la répète» (also «la répèt’»), which is used for theatre or dance rehearsals in colloquial French. As an abbreviated form of «répétion» the concept includes, in contrast to rehearsal, the element of reiteration. [f: la répète] is based on the interests of the involved persons and gathers artistic, publishing and curatorial methods. [f: la répète] discusses ways of visualizing archive or lecture based research and questions the meaning of gender in a capitalistic system or Switzerland’s involvement in a colonial world order.

From early woodblock printed pamphlets of the Chinese Ming era to the power of Gutenberg’s invention, which helped to spread the ideas of the reformation throughout Europe to the Surrealist manifestos and magazines, from the deadly stand against barbarism by the White Rose to underground newspaper in the Soviet Union, from anarchist publications to Underground Comix in the US or The Hungry Generations Bulletin in Calcutta, the publication of underground newspapers, magazines, pamphlets and manifestos has always been an important form of resisting the powers to be.
This informal one-day symposium aims to re-introduce some of these histories to a new generation of readers and to contextualize them within the neoliberal realities facing publishing today. What roles do blogs and Zines play, what are their possibilities and limitations or to put it into a simple question: Is resistance still possible?
The informal symposium will be structured by 20 minute inputs by contributors who will cover different aspects of the historical and current examples using different formats such as lectures, presentations and performances. Each input will be followed by a 15 minute discussion. The symposium will end with a public round table.
