VOLUMES 2017 24- 25/11/2017 Helmhaus Zürich

For the project "$ervice" Alina uses textiles as a material, comics as a principle and collage as a method, to share the experience of sex workers. All artworks from this project are created on the basis of real stories. As a material, she uses only sheets and underwear from the protagonists. During the presentation, she will tell about the connection between the project "$ervice" and her previous artworks. She is going to describe the process of creation and share specials moments which were taking place during the work.

Alina Kopytsa (born 1983 in Poliske, Kyiv region, Ukraine). In 2006 she graduated from the National Technical University Ukraine "Kyiv Polytechnic Institute", department of graphic arts. After her studies, she participated in ukrainian and international exhibitions. In 2016 she had solo exhibitions in off-spaces in Switzerland ("Local int" in Biel and in "Sihlhalle" in Zürich). From  2017 she is a student at Zurich University of the Arts. In her drawings, fabric collages and patchworks she explores gender relations, sexuality and fetishism. She traces the connection between the sexual and social and between freedom and expectations in a provocative and humoristic manner.

On the streets of Zürich there are heaps of books and clothes "Gratis" or "zum mitnehmen". During the workshop, we will use this found material to express our own memories through them. We will create zines out of found thoughts, quotations, paper and clothes. (If you already think about Christmas: YES, a memory-fanzine is a good idea as a present :) )

Füsun Ipek is a visual artist, curator and designer.
She works on social phenomena that she reflects with different ways of expression: as performance, concept design, fanzine or exhibition.
She studied geography in Budapest, film history and theory (BA), art theory and aesthetics (BA&MA) and is currently a student of fine arts in Zürich (MA).

Big Data is all about quantity and patterns. The more data we collect, the more accurate picture of the complexity underlying the world we should get. Capturing all, the technology seeks to explain everything with patterns in the quantity of Data, revealing algorithms that could possibly simulate the world. While the publication and the VR Installation – "Big Data Immersion. When Is Less or More Enough” – allow immersion from different perspectives into the dimension of quantity, the performative reading describes a dystopian scenario of what would it be like, if a human behaviour was deprived of free will, caught within the rigid boundaries of a pattern and simulated by an algorithm. Drawing on the manual process of creating the dimension of quantity and printing 1024 silkscreen prints for the purpose of Big Data Immersion VR project, Katarzyna Nowak will give insight to her experience of following a trajectory of a self-defined algorithm over seven months, that is following every day the pre-determined algorithm's steps like in some kind of experimental protocol or a cooking recipe.

Before joining Master in Fine Arts at the Zurich University of Arts (2017), Katarzyna Nowak (*1984, Lodz, Poland) did her Master in Biotechnology at the Technical University of Lodz and University of Chicago (2008) as well as PhD in Natural Sciences at ETH Zurich (2012). Both as scientist and artist, she develops a praxis focusing on the bridging both fields with the goal of filling the knowledge gap between the scientific institutions and the public. She elaborates concepts foregrounding the necessity to open up science to the public in order to alleviate the social and economical divides.

In the poetry performance "Through the Darkness to the Light", Lubomira Lavrikova reveals a transformation of one’s inner self, a transcendental journey through the darkness, which finally leads to the light. It is a mystical revelation that includes a meeting with special beings. Some parts are almost sci-fi, playing behind the ordinary time line. Other parts are related to Zurich, especially to the lake of Zurich and the art scene.. It is a play with the meaning of words as well as with diverse cultures behind which human feelings remain identical.

Coming from the dark forest Lubomira learned to communicate with other worlds. She transforms these experiences into various kinds of art pieces as a record of not only her mind, but also of the collective unconsciousness. On a shamanic-like journey through different places she tries to understand why people act the way they act, and what their motivations and passions for life are. Through these observations she learns about herself and recasts the insights for you that you, too, can learn.

The earth series Part I is a sound-performance within an installation, it is about travelling to the inside of the earth, about earth cycles, dark ecology and how our bodies correlate with the earth cycles. James Lovelock’s Gaia Theory acts as a base of raised questions for my Performance. In own poems and scientific text I encounter the inside of the earth. A hidden place where no one likes to think to, as its too far from our perception, from our reality, where microbes live enclosed in stones for thousand of years. Correlations and interactions with politics and the earth systems are made. In an attempt of a self healing practice I use the deep breathing technique, an attempt towards the survival of the current state of being. Clay objects turn into muscial instruments, a sound and voice from the underground within I act and perform with Jonas Ringli as a guest musician.

Claudia Stöckli,

Artist/Musician and Performer lives and works in Zürich. She works with Sound/Music within installations, composes and writes Text. She dives into spheres, she diggs to uncover hidden issues about the current state being of the earth and anthropos. Layers of Text and Sound interwave and leave us back with uneasyness. Correlation to todays politics are made, to find out that we are just caught in a Feedback loop?

Jonas Ringli

Musician/Architect ETH, lives and works in Zürich. Drummer at Circle Brothers for more than 20 years and now playing the guitar.

Often someone is stopping us from doing what we want, if not the officials then it is ourselves. This one-window operation allows you to get the ausweis for whatever/wherever you always wanted to be. The rest is up to you.

Raphael Stucky declares his trouser pockets to be a nomadic production site, where many small drawings will be produced and published during the opening of VOLUMES 2017.

Stucky is an artist working in Zürich and Basel. He is currently completing his Master’s degree in Fine Arts at ZHdK. His practice deals with ephemeral moments, their traces and re-experience. His media include drawing, video loops, sound art and instrument making.

He is part of the artist collective "Dr. Kuckucks Labrador", which organizes art festivals, exhibitions, concerts and performance events in Basel.

This collection is a snapshot of the international self-publishing scene. Every year, zinesters and artists who self publish are invited to donate one publication towards our yearly exhibition. The publication then joins our ongoing archive.

A brief overview of the materials and cultural initiatives presented as part of the section “Mexa! Independent publications from Mexico”, with a special focus on two projects: Fictitious News & Fanzinoteca.

Paloma Ayala (1980) is interested in the relationship between domestic and political contexts. In her artistic practice, she establishes a working-relation with specific communities, creates topics of research, asks for collaboration or participation, and addresses domestic issues in the public with the ultimate purpose of bringing them back to the domestic. She is currently trying to resolve a connection between her Mexican native background and her current living space in Zürich, which until now has proven to be an elusive task.

Adriana Domínguez (1983) is a Mexican Art Historian and independent Curator, living and working in Zurich since 2013. Together with Elena Rosauro she runs the pop-up experimental art space la_cápsula. She has worked for and collaborated with art institutions both in Mexico and Switzerland, making the exchange between Swiss and Latin-american artists the main focus of her practice.

Based on the four most known variations of the myth of Narcissus, Eirini Sourgiadaki creates the mirror for the repetitive dialogue one has with her/himself. A meeting where no one shows up, a Skype call with two identical windows, a question that no one, never replies to.

Eirini Sourgiadaki is an artist from Athens, Greece, currently based in Zurich. She studied Transdisciplnarity in the Arts, Cultural Management, Sociology, Greek & English/American Poetry and she has been trained as a dancer. She is the author of four books (fiction, poetry) and since March 2017 the organizer of the weekly event platform The Analog Session (Stall 6, Gessnerallee, Zurich)

Reading- Writing - Making, "The Text”

Text is clay and colour and vice versa. In a small pocket size book thoughts become black and white and the voice of the landscape of the mouth a playful sound between text and material. She the artist, writes. Writing is the mould of ideas, the necessity of writing expands the possibly nuance of her voice. For VOLUMES the outcome of the reading workshop is on the wall, The Text is added/erased/altered because of change another text is written please feel free to spend some time with the text and change its format. The notes from the exhibition will be used for the workshop to follow in Athens.

Vasiliki Sifostratoudaki is a Greek artist who received a Master of Fine Arts from the Piet Zwart Institute, Rotterdam (2015). She is the founder of Yellow Brick, a project space/residency devoted to artistic research and playground/testing ground for exhibition making. 

Her personal work entangles materiality through methodologies of exploring, collecting and archiving, resulting to the creation of sculptural manifestations around the ideas of topos. For Sifostratoudaki, materiality stands as a broader term for framing geography, object, humans,language and gestures and sculpture as a moving organism.  She lives and works in Rotterdam (NL) and Athens (GR.) Sifostratoudaki is currently a artist in residence at CAPACETE – ATHENS.

Rezeptionsästhetik focuses on the area of Kypseli as a case study of the urban surplus.
Kypseli has been a principal core of the formerly successful financial model of reconstruction, introducing apartment buildings as one of the norms of modern living. The entrances to the apartment buildings are passages of temporary privacy, designed with the purpose of allowing the transition from the public space to the space of the residence. The working hypothesis of Rezeptionsästhetik draws on the entrances of Kypseli as the stock scenery for a performative locative archiving, activated by everyday practice.

The area of Kypseli was scanned with the intention of registering those entrances that showcase aesthetic or decorative features. The collected material was examined with respect to the style of ornamentation, the materials used, the design etc. and it was categorized according to a limited set of aesthetic typologies. The project comprises a series of performative interventions as potential scenarios of connecting to the preexistent.

Campus Novel is an artist run group that was founded in November 2011. The group focuses on several aspects of the archaeology of the present as part of a retrospective practice seeking for new signifiers. Campus Novel projects encompass elements from different fields in order to suggest a dialectic form, free from any preallocated meaning. Campus Novel are Gianni Cheimonakis, Giannis Delagrammatikas, Foteini Palpana, Yiannis Sinioroglou and Ino Varvariti.

Big Data Immersion. When Is Less or More Enough?

in collaboration with Moritz Keller (HyperWerk)

To generate a dimension of a big quantity, a large-scale systematic experiment deploying silkscreen printing was manually performed over the course of seven months. The trajectory of the experiment followed an algorithm – with the input of four templates with geometrical patterns, four printing colors and four overprinting orientations and the total output of 1024 silkscreen overprints. All 1024 overprinting permutations were digitalised, systemically analysed and transformed into the Data sculpture – a network of 1024 cubic rooms corresponding to 1024 prints. VR technology was applied to give the network a sense of place and allow immersion into the dimension of quantity underlying the Big Data technology.

VIBRATIONS is an open-access art journal for creative writing. In the second issue eight artists and musicians whose practice involves communicating through the written word, share their fascinations, thinking and processes in a virtual context. The virtual format aims to include a wide and diverse audience in order to generate a platform for the on-line discussion of ideas and encourage networking of artists and those interested in writing as arts practice. The journal aims to be as a laboratory of artist’s thinking in motion and invites established artists, emergent artists or researchers who would like to write, or offer other forms of expressions exploring such issues as: artistic production, subjectivity and collectivity in cultural production. The journal will be issued two times per year, in February and August. Austin Sherlaw-Johnson is a composer and performance artist who works in a variety of media. Recent work includes: Explicit Sounds (six actions for one performer),  Making a Box as Quickly as Possible (video), Anti-Conceptualism, (installation), John  Cage and Teeny Duchamp Play Chess in front of a Live Audience (theatre piece for  two performers) and You’re Beautiful (three three minute pop songs for two  performers).

Carlo Spiller, 1990 in Zürich geboren, studierte Deutsche Sprach- und Literaturwissenschaften und Philosophie an der Universität Zürich, danach am Schweizerischen Literaturinstitut. Zahlreiche Auftritte bei Poetry Slams im deutschsprachigen Raum. 2016 erhielt er das Aufenthaltsstipendium des Literarischen Colloquiums Berlin. Er schreibt Prosa, Lyrik und Theatertexte.

The children’s book Would you rather... by English Author and Illustrator John Burningham was first published in 1979. Christoph Elias Meier and Mara Züst took Burningham's incantation one step further and adapted the book’s meaning so that it asks about the essence of the things. Now these things, often forgotten about, but nevertheless populating our world, can be grasped by pondering wonderful and ample questions. This creates a game of foolish ventures, mental leaps and revocable choices, accompanied by fascinating illustrations made out of sand by Carolina Cerbaro.

Christoph Elias Meier studied history, politics and political economics and runs the writing and thinking studio schreib-service.ch. He is also part of the Wrongbrothers INC. Mara Züst studied history, art history and visual communications. She works as an artist, mediator and researcher and is the person in charge of the estate of Andreas Züst which runs the Bibliothek Andreas Züst, Oberegg (AI). Carolina Cerbaro studied visual communications and works as a graphic designer and artist. She is specialized in print and wallpainting. Furthermore she works as a mediator. They all live and work in Zurich.

Das K-Set Team spricht über ihre Sammlungstätigkeit und zeigt eine Standortaufnahme der aktuellen Bestände.

Das K-Set Archiv in Zürich sammelt und archiviert seit 2004 selbstgemachte Publikationen, die ausserhalb eines akademischen, professionellen oder kommerziellen Umfeldes entstanden sind, und deren Initiierung, Produktion udn Vertrieb auf Eigeninitiative der ProduzentInnen beruhen. Alle archivierten Objekte sind entweder Schenkungen oder wurden im öffentlichen und halbprivaten Raum gefunden, getauscht oder gekauft. Etwa ein Viertel des momentanen Bestandes ist in die Datenbank aufgenommen, welche über die Internet-Seite von K-Set zugänglich ist.

Seit zwei Jahren ist die Sammlung nicht mehr öffentlich zugänglich. Seit April dieses Jahres wird eine Auswahl des K-Set Archivs jeweils im Kabinett im Hinterzimmer des kollektiv geführten Buchladens Material an der Klingenstrasse 23 in Zürich ausgestellt.

Let's waste some time together and explore the algorythmic rooms of possibilities. Let's sample and remix digital and analogue, "artifacts" and experience collectively the pure pleasure to browse and surf and copy and paste to find new ways (to create a zine) of textcreation and textdigestion.

Vasiliki Sifostratoudaki is a Greek artist who received a Master of Fine Arts from the Piet Zwart Institute, Rotterdam (2015). She is the founder of Yellow Brick, a project space/residency devoted to artistic research and playground/testing ground for exhibition making.  
Her personal work entangles materiality through methodologies of exploring, collecting and archiving, resulting to the creation of sculptural manifestations around the ideas of topos. For Sifostratoudaki, materiality stands as a broader term for framing geography, object, humans,language and gestures and sculpture as a moving organism.  She lives and works in Rotterdam (NL) and Athens (GR.) Sifostratoudaki is currently a artist in residence at CAPACETE – ATHENS.

Rezeptionsästhetik focuses on the area of Kypseli as a case study of the urban surplus.
Kypseli has been a principal core of the formerly successful financial model of reconstruction, introducing apartment buildings as one of the norms of modern living. The entrances to the apartment buildings are passages of temporary privacy, designed with the purpose of allowing the transition from the public space to the space of the residence. The working hypothesis of Rezeptionsästhetik draws on the entrances of Kypseli as the stock scenery for a performative locative archiving, activated by everyday practice.

The area of Kypseli was scanned with the intention of registering those entrances that showcase aesthetic or decorative features. The collected material was examined with respect to the style of ornamentation, the materials used, the design etc. and it was categorized according to a limited set of aesthetic typologies. The project comprises a series of performative interventions as potential scenarios of connecting to the preexistent.

Campus Novel is an artist run group that was founded in November 2011. The group focuses on several aspects of the archaeology of the present as part of a retrospective practice seeking for new signifiers. Campus Novel projects encompass elements from different fields in order to suggest a dialectic form, free from any preallocated meaning. Campus Novel are Giannis Cheimonakis, Giannis Delagrammatikas, Foteini Palpana, Yiannis Sinioroglou and Ino Varvariti.

Big Data Immersion. When Is Less or More Enough?

To generate a dimension of a big quantity, a large-scale systematic experiment deploying silkscreen printing was manually performed over the course of seven months. The trajectory of the experiment followed an algorithm – with the input of four templates with geometrical patterns, four printing colors and four overprinting orientations and the total output of 1024 silkscreen overprints. All 1024 overprinting permutations were digitalised, systemically analysed and transformed into the Data sculpture – a network of 1024 cubic rooms corresponding to 1024 prints. VR technology was applied to give the network a sense of place and allow immersion into the dimension of quantity underlying the Big Data technology.
