Description

The fifth edition of VOLUMES – Independent Art Publishing Fair – will take place on Friday 23rd, Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th of November - for the first time the fair will also be open on Sunday - at the Kunsthalle in Zürich. The fair will present a fine selection of local and international artists and art books, zines and magazines. This hybrid event also features a range of performances, readings, presentations, exhibitions, and workshops.

VOLUMES is the only fair for independent art publishing in Zürich. This year’s edition takes place at the Kunsthalle Zürich, a museum in the Löwenbräu building. On the two floors of the museum, the visitors will be able to browse through the publishers' stands, take part in a series of free workshops, attend a programme of performances, talks and exhibitions.

This year's special focus is titled "SIN NINGUNA VERGÜENZA" and will give an understanding of independent publishing in Chile. VOLUMES's classic "International Open Call" exhibition, for which zinesters and artists from all around the world donate one publication, presents a snapshot of the current international DIY publishing scene.

VOLUMES 2018 is happy to be a part of Kunst: Szene Zürich 2018, taking place from 23 November until 2 December 2018 all over the city of Zürich.

Die Weltwährung Espero ist die Währung der Weltregierung mit Sitz in Sonceboz (JU). Die Münzen und Noten werden nur auf einer Seite bedruckt und dann auf der anderen Seite an Workshops von StudentInnen oder KünstlerInnen individuell validiert.

Der in Biel/Bienne stadtbekannte Aktionist Parzival’, der für sich die Weltregierung beansprucht und für den Weltfrieden eintritt, lebt und agiert von seiner Ambassade du soleilvon Sonceboz und Biel/Bienne aus in der ganzen Schweiz. Sein Aktionsradius wird über die Erreichbarkeit mit dem kraftstofffreien ÖV definiert, denn seine pazifistische Botschaft schliesst eine radikale Ablehnung jeglicher umweltschädlicher Energien ein, also auch die Benutzung von CO2-ausstossenden Autos oder Flugzeugen. Obwohl Parzival’ explizit ein politisches Ziel verfolgt, ist er doch mehr als ein politischer Aktivist. Kreativ verpackt er jede Äusserung, jede Agitation in eine künstlerische Form, die immer auch ein Esperanto-Kurs ist, denn Esperanto ist ein Werkzeug zur Erlangung des Weltfriedens. Parzival’ ist Künstler und als solcher der Outsider Art zuzuordnen.

Die monographische Publikation BONAN TAGON, MIA NOMO ESTAS (Edition Haus am Gern) über den Outsider Künstler Parzival’ ist Anlass zu diesem Workshop.

Studium Physik und Mathematik ETH Zürich (ohne Abschluss), Wirtschaft HSG (ohne Abschluss); künstlerische Tätigkeit seit frühen 1970er Jahren. Lebt und arbeitet in Sonceboz und Biel/Bienne und wirkt schweizweit im öffentlichen Raum.

13 - 16 h Workshop: Speculative Composting by Paloma Ayala, Martina Baldinger, Gökçe Ergör and Les Complices*

Join us in this Zine-making workshop about Composting!

A practice proposed by Donna Haraway, about breaking down feminist and environmental matters that are already important, to let them reemerge in time, as new ones. We invite you to compost a zine and to be the worm, the bacteria, and the heat that allows for a metaphorical fermentation to change the chemistry of the materials and create fertile soil. Offered on the workshop table will be materials about Ecosexuality, post-humanism, gay animals, horoscopes, anti-ablism, anti-racism, justice, Hundstage, feminism, gender violence, body notions, etc. All suggested or provided by the friends of the communitybased art space Les Complices*.

The collective zine will be put together during and immediately after the end of the workshop. 40 copies will be made and offered to participants that would want to come back the next day, or to the general public of VOLUMES. A printable/downloadable version will be available on the VOLUMES website.

Zine making is great way to explore visual fascinations and play with form of publication. On the workshop we’ll create and print an edition of collective zine using the simplest methods, improvising with collages and making basic binding.

About me:

 

Michał Chojecki (born 1985) – founder of Oficyna Peryferie. Visual artist, author of books and art projects. Assistant professor on Graphic Design Faculty in Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. In 2015 he defended his PhD dissertation on art books.

13 - 15.30 h Kinderworkshop: Schere, Kleber Papier – vom Buch zum eigenen Papierfächer

Mit Schere, Papier und Kleber erstellen wir unseren eigenen Papierfächer. Wie das Buch lässt sich der Fächer durchblättern und mit eigenen Inhalten füllen. Farbig verziert und lustvoll dekoriert wird er zum eigenen Schmuckstück mit geheimen Fächern und versteckten Botschaften. Wer Lust hat kann anschliessend mit einem Kinderquiz ausgestattet die Messestände besuchen und dort die passenden Antworten holen. So füllt sich der eigene Papier-Fächer mit Bildern, Texten und phantasievollen Ideen.

Alter: ab 5 Jahren

Dauer: Zu jeder vollen Stunde (13, 14 Uhr) starten wir und jedes Kind kann so lange daran arbeiten, wie es Lust dazu hat.

Can a punch of spinach become the starting point of a story? Bruno Munari and Leo Lionni showed us how a spot of color can be a character, a symbol and a clean representation of a limited territory for narrative. What if this green spot, the leaf of spinach, will represent at first our multicultural life, the receipt of grandma and the one of the refugee, the nature and the city, me and you?

SPINAT is a platform for illustration, an intercultural project-zine and a Zurich based creative collective that has been working with children and adults in different educational and curatorial projects since 2017 in collaboration with the MigrationsMuseum Zürich and the graphic designer Moreno Tuttobene.

19 h Babelsprech Internatioanl Eurovision Poetry

Am 23. November 2018 finden an 11 Orten in Europa Lesungen junger Lyriker*innen statt.

Sie sind Teil der letzten Babelsprech-Konferenz, die vom 21. – 24. November 2018 in Vaduz, Liechtenstein stattfindet.

Knapp siebzig junge Lyiker*innen lesen am 23. November 2018, 19:30 Uhr an 11 unterschiedlichen Orten in Europa. Neben Vaduz finden Veranstaltungen in London, Rotterdam, Frankfurt am Main, Köln, Zürich, Luzern, Salzburg, Wien, Ljubljana und Czernowitz statt (Details unten).

Die Lesungen sind Teil der letzten Konferenz von Babelsprech.International, welche vom 21. – 24. November 2018 in Vaduz, Liechtenstein stattfinden wird. Unter dem Motto „Eurovision Poetry“ befasst sich die Konferenz mit Lyrik als einer künstlerischen Ausdrucksform für eine neue Generation Europäer*innen.

Short description: Die Performance I'm an artist i am not setzt sich mit Identität und Identitätsverlust auseinander. Ausgangslage ist der vermummte Schuhputzer Boliviens, der sein Gesicht wegen seiner minderwertig angesehenen Arbeit und der damit verbundenen Diskriminierung geheim hält.

Anissa Nussbaumer ist eine Zürcher Künstlerin. Sie studierte an der ZHdK und an der Universität Zürich. Ein wiederkehrendes Thema in ihren Arbeiten ist die Wechselwirkung von Kunst und ihren Klischees. Zudem verfolgt sie Fragen wie diejenige nach der gegenwärtigen Rolle der Kunstschaffenden innerhalb einer postdemokratischen Welt.

18 - 21 h Karoline Schreiber: Drawing Your Subconscious

Karoline Schreiber will be installed like a psychiatrist at Kunsthalle Zurich and visitors are welcome to lie down on a couch and tell their dreams which will be recorded by the artist using a method she calls automatic drawing. One therapy session lasts around 15 minutes and the „patient“ can keep the drawing for a modest amount of money.

Karoline Schreiber is a swiss artist who draws and paints. She has participated in solo and group exhibitions in Switzerland and abroad and has been the recipient of various awards and prizes.  During the last years she developed  various site-specific drawing performances often using the method of automatic drawing. The growing process of drawing is always made visible for the audience by differnet means such as projections or live walldrawings.

19 h Juan Mauricio Schmid Bello: the encrypted devil in unseen details

The performance begins with 4 speakers playing sounds of streets and people in cities getting more and more distorted until they become complete noise. After 5 or 6 min the noise will fade into sounds of diabolical laughs. By the time the voices fade to quiet sounds of forests, waterfalls, children playing outside, I will play a guitar piece until those sounds fade out.

Inspired on reflections about the generational transitions and the rise of internet privatization as the end of two transformation decades in the golden free web years. The devil was in the details when everybody could still see it. Now it seems to be encrypted for the older generations, because there is something very unpleasant and evil in the rise of cinism in the meme generation.

Under the river down the river

A symbolic and surrealist trip about life. It is time to listen to our wild voice, to scratch the truth, to allow the red fur, the golden dust to appear, despite the blood.
Under the light of the lunar and the solar we will experiment freedom, fertility and the abundance of life.

Lara Buffard is a Baroque creature born in Paris in 1973, based in London with a double French/Swiss nationality.
She is a performance artist, who incorporates symbolic and surrealistic visuals within her performances.
She subverts the darkest aspects of life through striking and colorful images, communicating personal and social ideas in a playful and cabaret-like acts, transforming the human body to a ‘Raphaelite’ creature. The outcome is a piercing statement accompanied by fierce and a stimulating look. The emotions she evokes bring individuals to a pivotal place where a connection to life’s authentic meaning can be grasped: such an experience can be transformative. She graduated in Museology and later in Theatre Performance and Contemporary Live Arts. She worked 10 years as a Cultural project coordinator at Mudac (Museum of Contemporary Design and Applied Arts) in Lausanne.

Ivan "Ivy" is a developer of practices and performative roles in Dance, Music, and Visual Arts. They are a natural shapeshifter, re-imagining and re-conceptualizing femininity, gender, social and race expectations through (dis)identifcation. Furthermore, Ancestrality and Spirituality are reshaped and envisioned in queer futuristic pieces where the artist takes place as protagonist most of the time. Ivan also goes by the name "Tropikahl Pussy", an alter-gender-bender ego, producing "draglesque" and live music performances.

Vogue is more than just a dance. Vogue is a lifestyle and a culture in itself. Its origins lies in the underground, in the ghetto, made by Trans and Queers People of Color. Starting as an empowerment movement of marginalized bodies, Vogue has infected the whole world with it's fever. Ivy is bringing into one choreography the basics of vogue to make you sweat and want to be part of it. Cunty style.

1992 von Michael Hiltbrunner in Wikon (Luzern) gegründet, bildete Pablo Gerusa einen Knotenpunkt der Fanzinekultur in der Schweiz. Neben dem eigenen Fanzine Wiggerflut verkaufte er verschiedenste Publikationen an Veranstaltungen und per Postversand zum Unkostenbetrag. Neben Hardcorepunkzines interessierten ihn auch selbstpublizierte Comics, queere Zines und Egozines, und legte dazu eine Sammlung an, die von den 1970er-Jahren bis in die Gegenwart reicht.

 

Michael Hiltbrunner (*1975), Kulturanthropologe, Kunstforschender am Institute for Contemporary Art Research der ZHdK, forscht zu Archiven forschender Kunst, etwa zu Serge Stauffer und der F+F Schule und realisiert dazu Ausstellungen und Publikationen. Aktuelle Erscheinungen sind «Wir muten Ihnen alles zu – Peter Trachel und die Hasena» (Scheidegger & Spiess), «Blaubart – Parodien eines Potentaten» (Jonas) und «Marcel Duchamp – Die Schriften» (Regenbogen).

 

Pablo Gerusa, Fanzine-Aktivismus in der Provinz

In Wikon (Kanton Luzern) gründete Michael Hiltbrunner 1992 mit 17 Jahren den Fanzine-Vertrieb Pablo Gerusa. Er interessierte sich für Hardcorepunk, die Besetzerszene und andere Alternativbewegungen und hatte im gleichen Jahr mit Gleichgesinnten in Zofingen das Fanzine Wiggerflut ins Leben gerufen. In den Fanzines und den Distributionsnetzen der Hardcorepunkmusik fand er eine international sich austauschende Community vor, die die Möglichkeiten des bald darauf nutzbaren World Wide Webs gleichsam vorwegnahm. Die Hefte aus der westlichen Welt (Europa, USA, Neuseeland u.ä.) verkaufte er auch in einem Koffer, meist an Konzerten in besetzten Häusern und alternativen Kulturzentren in der Deutschschweiz. Ebenfalls 1992 fing er an, Konzerte zu organisieren, in Kellern, im Jugendhaus und im alternativen Kulturverein Ochsen in Zofingen.

Zu Beginn ziemlich rechthaberisch, die «Lügenpresse» anprallend, ruppig und gestalterisch nachlässig, entwickelte sich Pablo Gerusa zu einer liebevollen und gutgelaunten Passion aus der Provinz. Schon 1993 hatte der Vertrieb ein Postfach in Zofingen, 1994 gab es in Oftringen ein Labor mit Heftli-Bibliothek. Es gab Kooperationen mit Dolores et Odium im deutschen Grenzach-Wyhlen bei Basel und dem Atrox Vertrieb im St. Gallischen Fontnas bei Vaduz. Marius Vogelmann aus Brugg (AG) tippte 1993 eine Liste für den Vertrieb, mit Panikeshi aus Biel ergab sich 1994 eine Zusammenarbeit und der in Basel wohnhafte Philipp Messner gestaltete eine Vertriebsliste. Die gute Laune wirkte ansteckend und mehrere ähnliche Vertriebe und Initiativen wurden lanciert, auch mit dem brisant Kiosk in Basel gab es Austausch.

13.30- 14.30 h Willimann/Arai: How to disappear (completely): Uniformity / Practice 4

Willimann/Arai experiment with strategies of disappearing and integration, analogue and digital communication- and translation-processes and the potential of misunderstandings.

In this unique live-attempt to overcome the 7 hours and 9582 km between Zurich and Tokyo, Willimann/Arai will synchronise their actions for one hour via Skype.

 

Willimann/Arai experimentieren mit Strategien des Verschwindens und der Integration, mit analogen und digitalen Kommunikations- und Übersetzungsprozessen und mit dem Potential von Missverständnissen. In diesem einmaligen Live-Versuch, die 7 Stunden und 9582 km zwischen Zürich und Tokyo zu überwinden, werden Willimann/Arai ihre Handlungen für eine Stunde über Skype synchronisieren.

15 h Johannes M. Hedinger: ONCE UPON A TIME

ONCE UPON A TIME

Johannes M. Hedinger zeigt einen kleinen Ausschnitt aus seiner bisher ungesehenen Sammlung alter schwarz/weiss-Fotoalben aus den Jahren 1880 - 1950. 

Die Alben stammen von verstorben Personen, deren Hausrat aufgelöst und auf Flohmärkten in der Schweiz, Deutschland und Polen verkauft wurden.

Die Sammlung wurde in den letzten 20 Jahren zusammen getragen und umfasst heute über 200 Alben. 

Am Samstag und Sonntag je um 15h werden die Vitrinen für kurze Zeit geöffnet und die Alben können zusammen mit dem Sammler und eingeladenen Gästen begutachtet und besprochen werden.

17 h Merzedes Sturm-Lie: Memories of Gold

Merzedes Sturm-Lie will perform and read parts from the booklet '13151424 1215225 9131315182011292025' (published 2015). The booklet is inspired by writings of Slovenian poet and dadaist Srečko Kosovel and relates to processes of transformation, inverted realities, coding, investigating histories, death and dreams. 

 

Merzedes Sturm-Lie (1991) is a multimedia artist and curator based in Brussels (BE) and Stockholm (SE). In her work she investigates history as a spiral of infinite construction and de(con)struction. When producing works she searches for ways to understand the complexity of power and to question that which appears natural, but is in fact a construction. She studied at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm and has co-founded several artist-run spaces in both Brussels (Swallowing Helmets, Espace0IN) and Stockholm (Sekten, Konstattack).

Lie down: a prelude (performative reading)

Based on the chapter 0 of the publication  As long as there is time to sleep, this performative reading weaves together intimate stories about sleep from (anonymous) contributors and texts from scientific, philosophical and cultural sources. Tactile sounds of the contact between the body and the blanket merge with the voice.

Yoojin Lee uses object, sound, text and performative gesture to experiment with ways of being in the world that embody care, knowledge, (un-)belonging and resistance. Recent work has explored the potentiality of overlooked human and non-human behaviours and states of (in)activity.

Black Fluo emerges from a centre of intersecting lines, the middle point of flowing destinies each on a one way journey. 
Fluorescent darkness is the primal texture from which this fourtet from Chiasso, constructs their resonances and melodies. An outlandish mix between electronic and classical music, contaminated with diluted frequencies from the sidereal space and the ancient layers of dead languages. 
Black Fluo observes from the monolithic tower the slow inevitable end of things, a world of potsherds to which they play its beauty. 
The last sparks of a supernova.

14.30 - 15 h Natalia Baluta: From public to private and back

Evolution of the photobooks focus from Soviet times to the present moment in Russia. 

Photobook medium was rather popular in USSR, as of early years after the revolution it was nourished by the communists as a powerful propaganda vehicle. But throughout soviet years photobooks were always dedicated to societal and community subjects, some personal stories were allowed only in kids books. The vast photobooks heritage of soviet era mostly vanished during perestroika times, contemporary artists and photographers in Russia reinvent the medium, and after long disregard now personal and intimate subjects are back in focus for them. Large-scale documentary albums seem to be a trend of the last century, contemporary projects are small, intimate, small-circulation, easy if not in content, then by weight. But what if now this domination of me-stories is preventing the important big projects to be developed? How authors and curators can find the right balance for contemporary photobooks in Russia?

Die Publikation We say, we are fine. They say, we are not. (2018) reflektiert das Verhältnis Schweiz-Südafrika aus der Perspektive von in Südafrika lebenden Schweizer/innen bzw. Protestierenden in der Schweiz anhand zweier Quellen aus den 1980er-Jahren.
 

Als erste Quelle diente Denise Bertschi das Archiv des fast 100-jährigen Swiss & Social Sports Club in Kapstadt und die regelmässig an seine Mitglieder verschickten Newsletter. Aus diesem Bestand stellt Bertschi thematische Collagen zusammen, die ausschliesslich das Leben des Clubs spiegeln: Vereinsaktivitäten stehen neben Business- angeboten und volkstümlicher Heimwehkultur. Denn darüber, was sich ausserhalb abspielte, erfährt man in diesem Quellenmaterial nichts – dass der Premierminister bzw. Präsident P. W. Botha zur gleichen Zeit die Apartheidgesetze verschäfte und militärisch gegen den ANC (African National Congress) vorging. Den Collagen stellt Bertschi Bilder der sozial engagierten Zürcher Fotografin Gertrud Vogler gegenüber (1936–2018). Vogler, Chronistin des sozialen Widerstands in Zürich und anderswo, hielt unter anderem die Apartheid- Proteste in der Schweiz dokumentarisch fest. So manches Bild der Anfang dieses Jahres verstorbenen Fotografin hat sich ins kollektive Gedächnit der Schweizer/innen eingeschrieben. Während sich «zu Hause» ab 1965 verschiedene Gruppierungen gegen die Apartheid einsetzten und mit ihren Aktionen spätestens in den 1980er-Jahren eine breitere Öffentlichkeit erreichten, scheint die im Swiss Social & Sports Club aktiven Schweizer/innen in Kapstadt ganz anderes beschäftigt zu haben.

Dieses Kontrastieren des Politischen mit dem vermeintlich Banalen wirft die Fragen auf, wie sich geografische Nähe bzw. Distanz und Beteiligung auf Verdrängungsprozesse auswirken und wer eigentlich wie zum Agenten wofür wird. Die gesellschaftliche Realität der protestierenden Minderheit in der Schweiz war eine ganz andere als die der Mitglieder des Swiss Clubs in Kapstadt. Augenfällig ist auch, wie sich die Verwendung von bestimmten Bildwelten über die Zeit im politischen Spektrum verschiebt. Die damals von den Schweizer Protestbewegungen verwendeten Bilder bestätigen zum Teil rassistische Stereotypen sogar eher, als dass sie sie hinterfragen. Politisch ähnlich gesinnte Gruppierungen würden diese heute kaum mehr verwenden. Vielmehr finden sich ähnliche Stereotypen heute in der Abstimmungswerbung rechtspopulistischer Parteien wieder.

16.30 - 17 h JB Institute: Buchpräsentation "Stranger In Polaroid" – Rediscovered production images from Jim Jarmusch’s famous movie Stranger Than Paradise

Die Internationalen Filmfestspiele von Cannes 1984: Jim Jarmusch wird mit der Goldenen Kamera für den besten Debütfilm ausgezeichnet. Bei der Entstehung der beiden Filme wurde an den Sets mit Polaroid fotografiert: Stranger Than Paradise (1984) zählt zu Jarmuschs wichtigsten Filmen, der ihm zum internationalen Durchbruch verhalf. Mit Passagen über New York, Cleveland und Florida erzählt dieses Roadmovie in typisch lakonischer Jarmusch-Manier, voller Poesie und der Vorliebe für skurrile Charaktere, von den drei Einwanderern Willy und Eddy sowie deren ungarischer Cousine Eva, die ihr Leben im Exil, ihre Träume, Sehnsüchte und innere Rastlosigkeit beschreiben.

Otto Grokenberger hat diesen Kultfilm produziert und zeigt mit dem neuen Bildband Stranger In Polaroid (2018) erstmals exklusive und bisher unveröffentlichte Polaroid-Bilder vom Set und der Produktion des Films. Es sind die einzigen Aufnahmen in Farbe, die vom Filmset, den Orten, Darstellern und Kostümen existieren.

Jenne Grabowski, Gestalter und Herausgeber des bei JB. Institute veröffentlichten Titels, spricht mit Otto Grokenberger über seine Zusammenarbeit mit Jim Jarmusch, die Entstehung des Films Stranger Than Paradise und über die Besonderheit des Polaroid-Bildes.

Today, labia surgery in young women is a frequent beauty correction and popular! Whether they now have more beautiful names for their sex?

I have found words that describe, name, formulate the female genitals - and will speak these words into a microphone, repeat them and lift them out!

my performances and artistic works are generated in cooperation with people. i’m inspired with new and different thoughts, which arise in dialog with them. also the place, the space and the environment are essential for my work. the setting, the personhood imbue me while performing. it’s hardly imaginable to repeat a performance, because my life is too rich, new encounters are too interesting. but most of all i’m inspired by everyday life. it’s the basis. then there’s the fantasy, my imagination. it’s like riding on a carousel, it takes form and changes permanently.

‘Wild olive’ is a word game for women best played under the influence of the smell of Wild olive (Elaeagnus angustifolia) tree flowers (which, according to certain sources and rumors, increases their libidos.) Players are invited to write with words they pick randomly and share the results.


Balca Ergener is a visual artist from Istanbul. She is currently living in Zurich and studying at the MFA program at ZHdK. ‘Wild olive game’ is her most recent work. She assembles the products of these collective writing sessions in books.

In the current wave of publishing it seems decisive to recognize who and where a public is. The four panelists, from distinct professional backgrounds and all engaged in experimenting with specific publishing formats, will share and challenge their perspectives on editorial, esthetic, and production related issues which react upon addressing specific audiences.

 

Giovanna Silva, based in Milano, is the founder of Humboldt Books and San Rocco Magazine. As a photographer she has been contributing to Domus and Abitare, and furthermore is the author of several books visually exploring globalized historicity, among others Afghanistan Rh- and 17 April 1975. A Cambodian Journey.

 

Sereina Rothenberger runs, together with David Schatz, the Zurich-based graphic design studio Hammer. They are responsible for the art direction of NICE magazine. Each issue is dedicated to a specific African city and is developed in workshops directly on-site. She is a professor at the College of Arts and Design in Karlsruhe and a faculty member at Vermont College of Fine Arts.

 

Hinrich Sachs is a visual artist and writer, based in Basel. While reflecting upon Western cultural frameworks, he focuses on testing, elaborating, and transferring forms and formats. He is currently finalizing Fog Friend Font. Ways of Doing, a multiple author publication project on the condition of multi-lingualism, to be released by Humboldt Books.

 

Eleni Riga is a curator and the co-founder of hdkepler, a platform in outer space “in research of a habitable place to establish, share and exchange artistic and curatorial practices“. Working between Greece and France, hdkepler employs formats like workshops, DIY publications, and screenings.

ONCE UPON A TIME

Johannes M. Hedinger zeigt einen kleinen Ausschnitt aus seiner bisher ungesehenen Sammlung alter schwarz/weiss-Fotoalben aus den Jahren 1880 - 1950. 

Die Alben stammen von verstorben Personen, deren Hausrat aufgelöst und auf Flohmärkten in der Schweiz, Deutschland und Polen verkauft wurden.

Die Sammlung wurde in den letzten 20 Jahren zusammen getragen und umfasst heute über 200 Alben. 

Am Samstag und Sonntag je um 15h werden die Vitrinen für kurze Zeit geöffnet und die Alben können zusammen mit dem Sammler und eingeladenen Gästen begutachtet und besprochen werden.

15 - 18 h Karoline Schreiber Drawing Your Subconscious

Karoline Schreiber will be installed like a psychiatrist at Kunsthalle Zurich and visitors are welcome to lie down on a couch and tell their dreams which will be recorded by the artist using a method she calls automatic drawing. One therapy session lasts around 15 minutes and the „patient“ can keep the drawing for a modest amount of money. 

 

Karoline Schreiber is a swiss artist who draws and paints. She has participated in solo and group exhibitions in Switzerland and abroad and has been the recipient of various awards and prizes.  During the last years she developed  various site-specific drawing performances often using the method of automatic drawing. The growing process of drawing is always made visible for the audience by differnet means such as projections or live walldrawings.

Reina sendet von ihrem Bett aus. Im Bett liest sie und schreibt. Es gibt Bücher, Pizza Schachteln, Haufen von Kleidern und einen Schlafsack; beteiligt sind Freunde und Anrufende, in’s Studio. Nachbarn, Pflegende, Regentropfen, Hörerinnen und der Tod.
Eine Gebärdensprachdolmetscherin spiegelt das Gesagte und Gehörte. Beide in kurzen Hosen und Regenjacken. Eine rote Lampe zeigt an, wann das Gesagte auf Sendung ist.
Die Performance stellt Fragen von Zugang, Zugänglichkeit und Abgeschnittensein, Isolation und Pflege, intersektionale feministische Schreibpraxen als künstlerische Wissensproduktion des in Bezug stehens.

Reina is broadcasting from her bed. In bed she reads and she writes. There are books and pizza boxes, heaps of black clothes and a sleeping bag; involved are friends and people that call the radio studio, neighbours, caretakers, raindrops, listeners and death.
The performance is being recorded and replayed in a loop. A sign language translator accompanies the reading, also translating the sounds and movements of the performer. Both are in summer shorts and rain jackets. A red light bulb indicating that the broadcast is going on air.

Romy Rüegger is an artist.
Performances, audio works, and choreographed spaces on relationships of personal and collective memory appear in exhibition spaces, on the radio, and in publications. Recently "Binary Codes as No" Gasworks London, exhibition Haus Konstruktiv "Synthetic Stream Plays (personal)" Kunsthalle Basel. A reinstallation of the work "A Play for Recorded Voices" (Les Complices* 2012) can currently be seen at Helmhaus Zürich.

In this paperback, questions regarding how to navigate in the present are not raised to generate an answer, a method, or a map, but rather as framing principles analogous to those of a logbook. On a voyage, a ship’s crew registers surroundings and important events in a manner such as this. The cargo contained within this edition is an assemblage of materials provided by over 60 practitioners from a variety of professions and personal backgrounds, and is therefore heterogeneous in terms of language, form and content. The resulting narratives emerge across the pages in the trails left by individuals and collectives of human beings as they move, learn and unlearn, traversing the various apparatuses that determine their agency. In this way, the term navigation is activated, implicitly and explicitly on myriad levels such as the biographical, historical, epistemological, technological and the aesthetical.

Hinrich Sachs, editor of this book, will be present at the booth of Onomatopee to present it.

Dazu wird noch die eine oder andere "Geschichte hinter dem Artwork" präsentiert. hd.kepler. is a platform dedicated to art and research, created by Eleni Riga and Florent Frizet.

It aims to connect individuals & ideas focused on notions of economy, experimentation, cultural translation, anthropology of images and remediation. hd.kepler. is meant to function as an exoplanet. It is always in research of a habitable place to establish, share and exchange artistic and curatorial practices. hd.kepler. is interested in developing its activity between France and Greece, acknowledging opportunities could be found elsewhere.

On the Run, a biannual publication is one of the main activities of hd.kepler. Ecologies of Gaze is the second issue of this publication. It is conceived as a study of attention through the spectrum of proximity and care. The starting point was the book “For an Ecology of Attention” where the thinker, Yves Citton, uses theories of economists George Franck and Maurice Goldhaber considering attention as a currency. Citton proposes a change of direction from the “One” to the “Other” and from the “We” to our environment. We have asked artists and curators how they practice attention in a world governed by automatism.

Deniz Beşer is an Istanbul and Vienna based visual artist, art coordinator and zinester who graduated from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, Ceramic and Glass Design Department (Istanbul, Turkey) and Universidad de Sevilla, Painting Department (Seville, Spain). Beşer is one of the founders of the zine collective ”Heyt be! Fanzin”, ”Nase Zine” and pyshchedelic-punk band ”Zoomk-Ru-Tu”. He is also the Coordinator of ”Fanzineist – Zine Fest of Istanbul” and ”Open Studio Days Istanbul”.

The project is looking at Common places, as a domestic space extended beyond the lock of a private space, referring to the territorial intimacy.
The common place, yet existing, becomes a fragment of a larger environment, a piece of an imaginary project, to which paper is the very first matter.
Paper is thus a publication gathering this survey, on a newspaper format, printed at Chinese public press, in 500 copies.

Iris Lacoudre is an architect based between Paris and Stockholm.
She works at the fringe of architecture field.
Working on a range of projects at different scales, from a bench to collective housing, she establishes no hierarchy between scales and disciplines.
She is currently teaching at the School of Architecture EAVT in Paris.

Alle archivierten Objekte sind entweder Schenkungen oder wurden im öffentlichen und halbprivaten Raum gefunden, getauscht oder gekauft. Etwa ein Fünftel des momentanen Bestandes ist in die Datenbank aufgenommen, welche über die Internet-Seite von K-Set zugänglich ist.

MATERIAL is Zurichs bookstore dedicated to independent publishing and artists’ books, regularly hosting book presentations, readings, poetry sessions and art exhibitions. For Volumes 2018, MATERIAL presents a special selection of zines, books and editions by artists and publishers that have either visited or exhibited at MATERIAL since it’s opening in 2017.

MATERIAL ist die Zürcher Buchhandlung für unabhängigen Publikationen und Künstler*innenbücher und veranstaltet regelmässig Lesungen, Buchpräsentationen und Ausstellungen. Für die Volumes 2018 wird eine Auswahl an Zines, Büchern und Editionen von Künstler*innen und Verlagen präsentiert, welche seit der Eröffnung 2017 das MATERIAL entweder besucht oder dort ausgestellt haben.

ongoing Message Salon

message salon embassy ist das Kunstprojekt von Esther Eppstein, seit 2015.

message salon embassy lädt internationale Künstlerinnen und Künstler ein, in Zürich Zeit zu verbringen. Madame l’Ambassadeur Esther Eppstein ermöglicht den Residenten der embassy Kontakte und Begegnungen mit der lokalen Szene, mit Kunstvermittlern in Institutionen oder Galerien, es entstehen neue Freundschaften und Verbindungen.

Das Atelier wird gelegentlich zum Kunstraum. Zum Abschluss jedes Aufenthalts erscheint jeweils ein „Zine“, eine kleine Publikation in limitierter Auflage, welche ihm Rahmen einer öffentlichen Veranstaltung präsentiert wird.

Esther Eppstein eröffnete 1996 in Zürich den Offspace und Kunstraum "message salon", der in den folgenden Jahren und an wechselnden Standorten zu einem wichtigen Treffpunkt und einer Plattform der lokalen Kunstszene wurde – bis zu seinem Ende 2013 im Kunsthaus Perla-Mode an der Langstrasse. Seit 2015 entwickelt die Künstlerin den message salon Kunstraum weiter zum Artist in Residence Projekt „message salon embassy“.

Der Salon, das Zusammenbringen unterschiedlicher Menschen im Kontext von Kunst, die Vernetzung von Kunstschaffenden aus allen Richtungen, das Setting und die Dokumentation des Geschehens definiert Esther Eppstein als ihre Kunstpraxis.

Fanzines aus der Sammlung Michael Hiltbrunner und dem Fanzine-Vertrieb Pablo Gerusa

1992 von Michael Hiltbrunner in Wikon (Luzern) gegründet, bildete Pablo Gerusa einen Knotenpunkt der Fanzinekultur in der Schweiz. Neben dem eigenen Fanzine Wiggerflut verkaufte er verschiedenste Publikationen an Veranstaltungen und per Postversand zum Unkostenbetrag. Neben Hardcorepunkzines interessierten ihn auch selbstpublizierte Comics, queere Zines und Egozines, und legte dazu eine Sammlung an, die von den 1970er-Jahren bis in die Gegenwart reicht.

Michael Hiltbrunner (*1975), Kulturanthropologe, Kunstforschender am Institute for Contemporary Art Research der ZHdK, forscht zu Archiven forschender Kunst, etwa zu Serge Stauffer und der F+F Schule und realisiert dazu Ausstellungen und Publikationen. Aktuelle Erscheinungen sind «Wir muten Ihnen alles zu – Peter Trachel und die Hasena» (Scheidegger & Spiess), «Blaubart – Parodien eines Potentaten» (Jonas) und «Marcel Duchamp – Die Schriften» (Regenbogen).

Pablo Gerusa, Fanzine-Aktivismus in der Provinz

In Wikon (Kanton Luzern) gründete Michael Hiltbrunner 1992 mit 17 Jahren den Fanzine-Vertrieb Pablo Gerusa. Er interessierte sich für Hardcorepunk, die Besetzerszene und andere Alternativbewegungen und hatte im gleichen Jahr mit Gleichgesinnten in Zofingen das Fanzine Wiggerflut ins Leben gerufen. In den Fanzines und den Distributionsnetzen der Hardcorepunkmusik fand er eine international sich austauschende Community vor, die die Möglichkeiten des bald darauf nutzbaren World Wide Webs gleichsam vorwegnahm. Die Hefte aus der westlichen Welt (Europa, USA, Neuseeland u.ä.) verkaufte er auch in einem Koffer, meist an Konzerten in besetzten Häusern und alternativen Kulturzentren in der Deutschschweiz. Ebenfalls 1992 fing er an, Konzerte zu organisieren, in Kellern, im Jugendhaus und im alternativen Kulturverein Ochsen in Zofingen.

Zu Beginn ziemlich rechthaberisch, die «Lügenpresse» anprallend, ruppig und gestalterisch nachlässig, entwickelte sich Pablo Gerusa zu einer liebevollen und gutgelaunten Passion aus der Provinz. Schon 1993 hatte der Vertrieb ein Postfach in Zofingen, 1994 gab es in Oftringen ein Labor mit Heftli-Bibliothek. Es gab Kooperationen mit Dolores et Odium im deutschen Grenzach-Wyhlen bei Basel und dem Atrox Vertrieb im St. Gallischen Fontnas bei Vaduz. Marius Vogelmann aus Brugg (AG) tippte 1993 eine Liste für den Vertrieb, mit Panikeshi aus Biel ergab sich 1994 eine Zusammenarbeit und der in Basel wohnhafte Philipp Messner gestaltete eine Vertriebsliste. Die gute Laune wirkte ansteckend und mehrere ähnliche Vertriebe und Initiativen wurden lanciert, auch mit dem brisant Kiosk in Basel gab es Austausch.

ongoing METASITU: DEGROWTH INSTITUTE MANUAL - urban tarot

Wheareas the urban population continues to grow world-wide, numerous post-industrial cities around the world are losing population. How do we masterplan for population degrowth in a sensible and sustainable way? How do we preserve memories or how do we engage in ruinification processes? The Degrowth Manual seeks to shift the paradigm of growth at urban scales through different tools - the urban tarot is one of them.

METASITU is a research-based art practice based in Kiev and Athens, abusing urbanism discourses and developing new tools to empower individuals in the way they relate to the territory. METASITU strives for a world of horizontal hegemonies, borderlessness and borderlands, guided by our curiosity and urgency.

ongoing ONCURATING: Archive

The independent international journal ONCURATING is a web-based publication focusing on questions around curatorial practice and theory. The interest of all those involved in the journal, whether curators, lecturers, researchers or participants of curating programs is to create a platform for presentation, discussion and research about this growing area of knowledge. To expand the pool of those involved we cooperate with different institutions and people for every new issue.

This platform is intended for both an art-interested public and cultural professionals from various areas of exhibition production and curating. The chief aim is to inquire into the issues of display and curating that condition exhibition making today. Thus the exhibition is to be understood here not merely in terms of its “surface” or design but as part of a complex of media in which all elements contribute consciously or unconsciously to the production of meaning. Today exhibition is considered a cultural practice which conveys values and norms and thus, implicitly, ideological concepts. To encourage a debate around curating is therefore a way to engage with the ideological sphere, and that is motivated through desire not to curate but to engage with the world.

ongoing Priscille Jotzu: Smell Forward

’Smell Forward’ is a fictional exploration that offers an olfactive and visual illustration of a close future populated by humans and AI robots. Six speculative scenarios, translated with a perfumer into six scents, are used as narrative instrument to foster our future visions and stimulate our imagination thanks to a sensory experience.

Priscille Jotzu is a french designer and artist based in Zürich. Her conceptual and speculative approach investigates our relation to the daily mundane artefacts, more specifically through the spectrum of the lower senses (touch, smell). She works mostly with ceramics, resins, wood, manual prints and scents.

Moscow based bookshop/gallery founded in summer 2018 by Sonia Shtol and Sasha Marshani

Matvey Kayf — an illustrator and a street artist from Moscow.  He started painting graffiti in early 00s while studying Russian laquer miniature at the college. After a while, in 2015, during the study graphic design at the university, he found himself interested in avant-garde art of the early 20th century. Since then he has been actively participating in projects, exhibiting his works. Now days artist deepens his experience and knowledges by experimenting with fonts, also painting on the streets when free. Today his main activity based on making limited edition printing: zines and silk-screens on paper, collages and assemblages from plywood.

ongoing Strapazin

Strapazin, das «Comic-Art-Magazin für Strapazierfähige», druckt Arbeiten von neuentdeckten bis berühmten, oft avantgardistischen Zeichner*innen ab. Strapazin erscheint vierteljährlich und wird von einem 13-köpfigen, basisdemokratischen Team herausgegeben.

Seit seiner Gründung 1984 bildet Strapazin eine Plattform für die nationale und internationale independent Comicszene. Strapazin fördert gezielt junge Zeichner*innen und die Avantgarde: Viele, mittlerweile berühmte Autor*innen hatten ihre ersten Auftritte im deutschsprachigen Raum oder überhaupt in diesem Magazin. Durch sein langes Bestehen dokumentiert Strapazin zudem ausführlich ein Stück visuelle Zeitgeschichte. Strapazin hat sich so als wichtigste, unkommerzielle Comic-Publikation für Erwachsene im deutschsprachigen Raum etabliert.

ongoing Spazio Lampo: Exhibition

Spazio Lampo was founded in Chiasso at Via Livio 16 in March 2015. Space Lampo is a working space and research center and place of sharing, meeting and cultural promotion. It is a space for practical and theoretical experimentation in the fields of visual arts, music, communication and design. It is a showcase for the local art scene, and a place for hosting established Swiss and foreign artists through the promotion of exchanges and interactions. The non-profit association organises cultural activities within the Spazio Lampo. The association derives its name from the commercial warehouses of the nearby Federal Railways, where some important Chiasso festivals have taken place and will shortly be demolished. During the first two years of activities, the association offered concerts, live radio shows, workshops, discussions, readings, screenings, performances, installations and exhibitions.

At VOLUMES, Spazio Lampo will present its activities and three projects represented by part of its co-founders: Alfio Mazzei with Pulver und Anche Records, an independent music label based in southern Switzerland; Aline d’Auria with the project Your City vs New York, a visualisation of the population of towns and cities around the world in comparison with the US metropolis; and Francesco Giudici (with Alfio Mazzei, Mario Pegoraro, Martina Povoledo and Aline d’Auria) with the live concert of Black Fluo.

ongoing Spieglerey: Kunst textlich

Kunst textlich invites you to discover work description as an underappreciated type of text. Spieglerey selected Zurich based authors as experts to write a variety of different examples of work descriptions of art pieces that are drawn together in a Zine. You are then asked to test your own skills along in a small exhibition on site.

A bio of us as Spieglerey : Spieglerey is a Zurich based plattform for emerging artists as well as curators. After their start in 2016 and a lot of events an exhibitions in the meantime they administered the Offspace «Transi» in this summer 2018.

ongoing Willimann/Arai: The gift exercise

Willimann/Arai present documents of their ongoing project „the gift exercise“, an artistic research about cultural techniques and concepts about how to relate with the foreign(er).

In a series of community-based projects which took place so far in China, Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan and Switzerland, Willimann/Arai investigate together with local communities the complex role-play of hosts and guests.

Since 2015, Willimann/Arai (CH/JP) develop site-specific projects in Europe and Asia. They work is organised around three main research-centered „umbrella“-projects, which they constantly develop: How to disappear (completely), Swiss Gymnastics and The gift exercise.

Based on the chapter 2 of the publication As long as there is time to sleep, the video is set on a personal laptop space with texts that are excerpts from and interventions into the chapter. It muses on how the interdependence between light, visibility and activity connects and/or disconnects people and emotions.

Yoojin Lee uses object, sound, text and performative gesture to experiment with ways of being in the world that embody care, knowledge, (un-)belonging and resistance. Recent work has explored the potentiality of overlooked human and non-human behaviours and states of (in)activity.
