The extensive research ‘Can you feel it?’ dove into the reality of tactility in printed matter by means of various authors exploring the reality of the concept and artist practices exploring the material. The book became a rather classic source of reference  and debate within scenes of  publishing and printmaking. The podcast set-up at VOLUMES allows for a more close engagement with the project.

Künstlerische und vermittelnden Intervention ausgehend von Figuren der Monstrosität, insbesondere der der Hexe.

In ihrer performativen Vermittlung für VOLUMES verwenden Eberhard und Gaich Bild- und Schriftmaterialien aus ihrem Archiv: Collagen, Abbildungen und Textfragmente interessieren sie als Träger von emanzipatorischen Potentialen.

Partizipierende sind angeleitet, aus ihrer Perspektive an gemeinsamen Transparenten/Plakaten zu arbeiten, sich mit aktuellen und vergangenen feministischen Themen auseinandersetzen und Bezüge zu ihren eigenen Biografien, aber auch aktuellen Ereignissen schaffen.

Come and join this generative short story making workshop where you will discover the meaning of publishing. Clara has been developing workshops to help you engage with a topic through story making. A frog could help you find housing, work remotely or regain freedom. It’s up to you to create your own narrative and write your story. All you have to do is fill in the blanks and your story comes to life. Whether you’re 8 years old or 99 and older, come express your creativity.

Participation without registration

A Chinese name workshop is zhaoyuefan’s ongoing practice since 2020. Based on the difficulty of pronouncing and remembering Chinese names most non-Chinese speakers have, which the artist observed a lot in her daily life,  the workshop is aimed to provide its participants with a glimpse of Chinese language and Chinese naming culture in an interactive way. During Volumes 22, the workshop will take place in the zentralwäscherei Café at a table stand in the form of an individual session. Each session (per person) is about 10-15 minutes long, in which the participant will create their own name in Chinese using the Chinese characters they chose corresponding to the pronunciation of their original names. Alongside the name workshop, the stand will also offer drinks with anecdotes, small talks about big issues, fortune telling, and a little zine about Chinese naming rules for the visitors to take and read.

About zhaoyuefan
zhaoyuefan was born in Wuhan, China and grew up in Beijing, China. She has been working and living in Germany and Switzerland since 2016.
zhaoyuefan's artistic practice revolves around her experience of living as a legal alien in foreign countries. Through video, installation, performance, and writing/storytelling, she uses lightness to touch on themes related to shaping of identity and collective memories. Often starting with collecting images, texts and objects from daily life situations, her works are a series of translations, transformations and transpositions based on the transcultural context.

Stéphanie Gygax is a Swiss artist, photographer and educator based in Zurich. Her work spans from photography, publishing, installation, sculpture to moving image. By looking into industrial objects, natural materials or fragments of the everyday life that she repeatedly assembles into new constellations, Stéphanie Gygax shifts their identity and reimagines their active presence in our lives.

For VOLUMES, she produced large prints associated with a zine that explores the various connections between the tire and the drift. Through a twilight remix of images borrowed from engineering, astronomy or agronomy videos and publications, she weaves a cosmic narrative around the shape and matter of the tire, its interaction with gravity and its effect on the Earth and our bodies.

HumDrum Press presents "A Living, Breathing Manifesto for Publishing the HumDrum Way". A constant-work-in-progress textual manifesto which has formed the basis for the Press’ ongoing research process into methods of publishing that hold the potential to reach and attract broader reader-and-writer-ships, and that understand publishing as a “communal” and “commons” activity.

The manifesto began as a transparent, shareable exploration of the internal working methods and developing publishing practice of HumDrum Press, before then circulating among friends, colleagues, fellow publishers, peers, and strangers, all of whom were invited to edit, comment, remove, add to, and grow the manifesto into a textual companion that could be useful, and usable for as many as possible.

Through this next exhibited iteration of the manifesto, the wish is to activate the text as a basis to encourage public consideration, conversation, exchange, (dis)agreements, and future thinking towards processes of publishing.
All who wish to, are welcomed to interact with the current text in any way they desire over the course of the VOLUMES weekend. The results of installation will be uploaded daily to a “master” digital version, which, at the end of the exhibition will act as Snapshot One of the Living, Breathing Manifesto for Publishing the HumDrum Way and circulated among all those who contributed, as well as being made freely and publicly available online.  

Das bei VOLUMES gezeigte Projekt, bezieht sich auf eine mehrjährige Recherche zu Aspekten der Uhrenindustriealisierung in der Schweiz und in Deutschland (in-house movement, David Heitz).

Ausgehend von Fragen zu non-linearer Darstellung, Wissenstransfer und Lesbarkeit ist, in Kooperationen, zwischen Anne Hubmann und David Heitz, das Konzept für eine Zeitung entstanden.
In konventionellem Format, aus bedruckten und ineinandergefalteten Papierbögen. Als modulares, erweiter- und veränderbares System wird das Medium Zeitung genutzt um das kontinuierlich wachsende Rechercheprojekt darzustellen.

Die Form Form der Präsentation wird sich über den Ausstellungszeitraum verändern. Die Bögen können gelegt, gehängt, geblättert und gehalten werden.

Wir machen jeder und jedem ein Heft – vom falzen zum binden zum zeichnen zum schreiben. Ich liebe ja Hefte, weil die so unkompliziert einen kleinen Rahmen bieten, eine Idee oder Gefühl einzufassen.
Gerne ein-zwei-drei Zeitschriften und Schere und Kleber mitbringen (wenn du gerne bastelst) und deine Lieblingsstifte schaden auch nie. Falls du zufällig letztens ein Gedicht geschrieben hast – auch toll.

Workshop ohne Anmeldung

This poetry/bookbinding workshop is in two parts. First, participants will learn how to make a small booklet using a 3 hole saddle stitch bookbinding. They can bring their own paper if they have something in mind or paper will be provided. In part two we will generate writing using experimental techniques such as incorporating specific words into poems, using model poems as inspiration, or practicing different poetic forms. Then we will use collaging methods to glue, stitch, stamp, or write text into the finished booklets. At the end of the workshop, participants can choose to read their finished pieces.

Starting from the claim that one can intentionally perform falling in love (and subsequently fall out of love), How to Love Many in Many Ways is a set of exercises that playfully invite you to enact various rituals with many options of potential players. In this case, _____ can be one of three players: Yourself, Other/s, and Other Other/s. Every question can start by loving and caring for Yourself as a core nucleus for the process of relating. Moving on, you experience connecting with the Other/s in ways that you may or may not have attempted before. And eventually you can push further and extend this awareness to become more attentive to different bodies and Other Other/s around you. How to Love Many in Many Waysis largely based on games and exercises already familiar since childhood. Yet it tries to make your experience strange and unfamiliar, and to weird the ways you interact with Yourself, Other/s, and Other Other/s. Love here is thought of as a wide spectrum of emotions that allow us to relate to ourselves, everyone, everything, and anything. These can include, and are not limited to, empathy, humor, embodiment, affection, annoyance, fondness, attachment, absurdity, attraction, desire, yearning, intimacy, patience, and reverence.
